Haven’t you noticed how every year, at the start of the season, stories pop up about real ‘top pigeons’ which are lost… or injure themselves during their first (training) races? But no-one can seem to find a suitable answer… let alone an explanation.
We were in the starting blocks to make a report over the exploits of Frederik Leliaert… known by the PiPa-forum members as the ‘Executioner from Zeeland’… his appointment as loft carer for the racing and breeding pigeons from Dr. Carlo Gyselbrecht, and his new challenge + the perspectives for then now kicked off sport season 2011 under the name Gyselbrecht-Leliaert. Obviously we couldn’t not mention his 3 national victories within a time span of 4 years, and of course his brand new national Ace pigeon ‘Eduardo’… the 1° Best ZLU-pigeon WHZB 2010 from the Netherlands! As a yearling in 2010 he flapped together the following impressive honours list:
-‘Eduardo’ NL09-3909177
1° Best ZLU-pigeon WHZB 2010
There was immediate interest for this ‘super bird’… utterly normal. But Frederik Leliaert is and remains in first place a ‘racer’, a man who wants to ‘win’ with the pigeons, and for this you need pigeons so as this ‘Eduardo’ to strengthen your ambitions. That’s why Frederik stood firm and didn’t sell his topper ‘Eduardo’, but moved, together with his 1° Nat Bordeaux-winner from 2010, and a handful of other top talents, to Knesselare to test him over and to race from there… so that he could pull the cart of the new duo ‘Gyselbrecht-Leliaert’! Up until now everything went according to plan. After they had got used to their new loft they raced their training races without any problems, together with the racers already present out the Gyselbrecht racing team. The pigeons were then basketted in the club for Moeskroen (almost 50 Km)... in which ‘Eduardo’ immediately manifested himself in the front squad! The hope grew by Frederik… would his ‘Eduardo’ also demonstrate his enormous’ class’ on Belgian soil there in Knesselare? There was a good chance… ‘clever’ pigeons remain ‘clever’ pigeons, and have the advantage over the competition.
Until tragedy struck last Thursday. Frederik let his racing widowers out as usual for their daily training around the loft… when they returned ‘Eduardo’ was missing. No panic, he thought… he has gone to visit the old lofts in Aardenburg. Nothing was further from the truth… ‘Eduardo’ was not there either… and he still hadn’t returned home in the evening. Both Frederik and Dr. Carlo feared the worst… a sleepless night followed, as to be expected! The following morning there was some relief when ‘Eduardo’ arrived in Aardenburg… badly injured on the chest and with a broken leg. No good for the races was the first opinion… but we’ve got him back… and as soon as he is better he can be put to breed… were the first comments of relief. Not so… because on Tuesday Frederik found the apple of his eye ‘Eduardo’ dead in his box… succumbed to his injuries. It is admirable that Frederik Leliaert, as a passionate fancier, dares to further race a ‘1° national Ace pigeon’, to enter him for the races again… definitely not an everyday occurrence… these days! Fate decided otherwise… an irreversible loss of all levels.
We are 100% convinced that Frederik will now do twice his best…to get the utmost out of his racing team… as homage to his ‘Eduardo’, and who knows… even find a successor for the ‘apple of his eye’ in the current racing team’! Chin up Frederik, and… go for it!
